This
17th century close still remains largely unchanged and is open during
the festival for tours.
The name of Mary King's Close is thought to have originated from the property
owner and advocate to Mary Queen of Scots, Alexander King whose daughter
was also called Mary.
The life of the close was shattered forever in 1645. The plague struck
this little community and the Local Council made the decision to incarcerate
the plague victims.
The close was bricked up and the people were left to die inside. It is
no wonder then that this close nicknamed 'street of sorrows' has a reputation
of being haunted by ghostly figures.
