HYNDFORD'S CLOSE
The seventeenth century mansion of the Carmichaels stood here.
The Earl of Selkirk resided here, as did the inventor Daniel Rutherford
who developed the gas lamp. He was grandfather to Sir
Walter Scott who visited as a child. Other prominent figures associated
with the close include The Duchess of Gordon, a stauch Jacobite and friend
of Robert Burns, and Sir
Walter Scott was made mason here.
