COVENANT'S CLOSE

So called for housing the residence in which a copy of the National Covenant was signed for approval at Greyfriars Church.

Lord Braxfield, Lord Justice-Clerk from 1780-1799, lived here for a time. Reputed for his harshness towards political offenders, he provided the basis for the character of 'Weir of Hermiston', authored by Robert Louis Stephenson.
