Dating back to 1521, this site was named from The Anchor Tavern in Fuller's Close, but is more notable for the 'Anchor Tavern Howff of the Crochallan Fencibles'.

The members of this club, Robert Burns included - anticipated a need for territorial resistance to invasion from the Continent.
